Roman Empire, Claudius II (268-270), Antoninianus, Cyzicus mint, 1st emission, ? officina.
Obverse: IMP C M AVR CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind;
Reverse: VENV-S AVG, Venus standing left, holding helmet in right hand and transverse spear pointing down in left hand, shield to the right resting against her;
Notes: The VENVS AVG coinage of Claudius II is very rare, and almost all of these antoniniani are from Smyrna; this is the second known example from Cyzicus, with the other, a double die match, being once part of the La Venera hoard. At Cyzicus, it was only used in the first issue, a brief and experimental one that mainly reused Smyrna reverses which were subsequently abandoned. Interestingly, the same obverse die was reused for a coin from the second emission in the Gysen collection.
