COMMENTARY
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Sapor II is the grand-son of Narses (293-302), the unfortunate opponent of Diocletian and Galerius. He is the younger son of Hormazd II (303-309) and brother Ardashir II (379-383), who succeeded him. The reign of Shapur II is one of the longest in the Sasanian history, nearly seventy years. He must fight against the Romans, Constantine I in Valentinian I, with varying success. It must recognize Hanniballien as king of Armenia (335). But after the disastrous campaign of Julian II where it is death (363), his successor Jovian must sign an advantageous truce for the Sasanian. To the east, it faces the Kushans who become his vassals. Under his reign, persecution against Jews and Christians show.
