In remembrance of the Enlightenment of The Buddha, the 5th instalment of the World Buddha Heritage coin features The Buddha seated beneath the Bodhi Tree at Mahabodhi Temple on its obverse and the Meto Pema (lotus) on the reverse. Chosen for its religious significance, the coin pays homage to the founder of Buddhism, at the site where he attained enlightenment.
Having witnessed countless suffering, the young prince, born Siddhartha Gautama, resolved to free all living beings. Embarking on a journey filled with hardships, the young prince shunned all worldly pleasures and resolved to attain enlightenment. At a place in Bodh Gaya, India, he meditated, and achieved deep concentration. Engaging in profound meditation under the Bodhi Tree, the final veils of ignorance were removed and The Buddha attained the supreme and perfect insight.

Emperor Asoka built the Mahabodhi Temple at the spot where The Buddha gained enlightenment. Today, Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where hundreds flock to worship and learn about the life of The Buddha. Founded in approximately 250BC, this architectural landmark of The Buddha’s enlightenment site is one of the few surviving examples of early brick structures in India. The entire temple complex covers a sweeping area of nearly 4.8 hectares and the tallest tower is a staggering 55 meters in height.

On the reverse of the coin, the Meto Pema (lotus) is featured. The lotus is one of the most poignant representations of Buddhism, symbolizing the complete purification of body, speech and mind. Growing from the mud, the lotus emerges through the clear water, finally coming to rest on the surface in the form of a beautiful flower. This pattern of growth signifies the transformation of the soul, from the dregs of materialism, to the purification of the soul, and into the clarity of enlightenment.

The rich historical, cultural and religious significance that this coin represents makes it a unique and valuable addition to collectors. A tribute in veneration of The Buddha, it is truly a gem of our World Buddha Heritage series.
