Lucius Septimius Severus Pertinax
"The Final Farewell" Septimius Severus died on February 4, 211 CE, during a campaign in Britain, in the city of Eboracum (modern-day York). He had traveled there with his sons, Geta and Caracalla, to strengthen Roman control. Ailing and aware that his end was near, he even commissioned a porphyry urn to hold his ashes. Of this small vessel, he remarked that it would contain the remains of a man for whom the world had been too small.
Before his death, he bid farewell to his sons, saying: "Live in harmony, enrich the soldiers, and scorn everyone else." However, good relations between the brothers were never a possibility. Suspicion between them began to surface even on the journey from Britain to Rome, ultimately culminating in a calculated act of murder.
