TETRICUS I (271-274)

"The Fall of the Gallic Empire" After the death of Victorinus, Tetricus I became the new Gallic Emperor, recognized in Britain and parts of Gaul. He managed to reclaim the provinces of Gallia Aquitania and the western part of Gallia Narbonensis. Tetricus took advantage of the fact that the Roman Emperor Aurelian was preoccupied in the East, dealing with Queen Zenobia's rebellion in Palmyra.

He reinstated judicial systems in Trier and, in 270 CE, appointed his son, Tetricus II, as Caesar. Meanwhile, Aurelian defeated the Kingdom of Palmyra and turned his attention to Gaul. In 274 CE, he triumphed over Tetricus in the Battle of Catalaunum. Emperor Aurelian's victories in both the East and West restored unity to the empire, and the Gallic Empire was seamlessly reintegrated into the Roman Empire.
