Sextus Pompeius Magnus Pius

"Pietas erga parentes, deos et patriam - Devotion to parents, gods, and country" This denarius, minted by Sextus Pompey after his victory over Quintus Salvidienus Rufus in the naval battle near Rhegium in 42 BCE, is associated with Sextus being proclaimed the "son of Neptune." Despite being the supreme commander of the Roman navy, Octavian compelled the Senate to declare Sextus Pompey a public enemy. He was defeated by Marcus Agrippa in the naval battle of Naulochus (September 3, 36 BCE) and later executed on the orders of Mark Antony in 35 BCE.

The reverse of the coin depicts the Catanaean brothers, Amphinomus and Anapias, who, according to legend, rescued their parents during an eruption of Mount Etna. They symbolize respect and devotion to one’s parents.
