An exceptionally rare and interesting type, lightly toned and struck on a flan of good quality. Soon after his father Valerian’s accession, Gallienus was elevated to the rank of co-emperor and spent much of his time in the west repelling the Germanic invaders. His successes there were celebrated on coins such as this one and earned him the honorific title of “Germanicus”. I was able to find only three other specimens of this type on ACSearch, all struck from the same pair of dies.
