Warm brown patina with smooth surfaces. Very attractive styling on both obverse and reverse. Carthage was a colony on the northern coast of Africa (in what is now Tunisia), founded by settlers from the Phoenician city of Tyre in the 8th century BC. Over time the colony grew into a powerful trading center which came to dominate the western parts of the Mediterranean world. By the 3rd century BC Carthage had begun to come into conflict with the expanding power of Rome; thus began the Punic Wars, a series of conflicts which started in 264 BC and finally ended with the siege and complete destruction of Carthage in 146 BC at the hands of the Roman general Scipio Aemilianus.
