An interesting and historical coin.

Berkeley Chinese Student Association issued counter marked Spanish Silver Dollar. "Freedom Dollar ".

A fundraising attempt by the Chinese Students Association in Berkeley to support the students involved in the Tiananmen Square Students protests in 1989 for democracy in Communist China. The size of the gathering and subsequent massacre of the students by the Chinese Army was a significant historical event which gained worldwide attention.

These coins used old silver coins both Chinese and international stamped with anti-communist slogans and sold at a slight profit to support displaced students after the Tiananmen massacre. Given the crackdown, short duration and sensitivity of such issues, these became very rare.
