Septimius Severus. AR denarius, Emesa, 193 CE; 2.99g. cf. BMCRE 373–4 (obv. legend IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II), RIC cf. 398 (same), cf. RSC 279a (same). Obv: IMP CA L SE SEV – PERT AVG COS – I [sic]; head laureate r. Rx: LIB–ER – AVG; Liberalitas standing half-l., holding coin counter and cornucopia. VF.
Unpublished and possibly unique variant with the nonstandard abbreviations CA for CAE and SE for SEP in obv. legend, as well as COS I instead of COS II. The inclusion of COS I places this coin in RIC’s Group II for coins of Severus recognized as having been struck at Emesa. Coins in Group II include COS I in the obv. rather than ending at AVG and omitting the consulship number entirely.
Coins in Group I and II were struck in 193. Coins in Group III were struck in 194, and include COS II in the obv. legend. On this coin, the I in COS I is below the emperor’s bust and partially off the flan; while this placement is unusual it also occurs on at least one COS II die on which the II is placed below the bust.
