Comments:
Every year, Calgary hosts the Calgary Stampede, a ten-day rodeo, carnival, and exhibition attracting over a million visitors annually. It is Canada's largest annual festival and has since become a cultural icon of the Canadian Prairies. Starting in 1963, trade dollar tokens were struck for use during the festival as a souvenir and novelty, good for one dollar anywhere in Calgary before a certain expiry date. Because most were kept as souvenirs rather than redeemed, this generated a large profit for both the issuing mint and the Stampede authorities.
