The introduction of a $2 coin is a major new development in Australia's coinage system. The design on the reverse side depicts the bust of a traditional aboriginal set against a background of the Southern Cross and Australian flora. This design restores to Australian currency a recognition of Australian aboriginal heritage: A recognition that was lost when the $1 note was replaced by the $1 coin in 1984. The reverse was designed by The Royal Australian Mint's Chief Engraver, Horst Hahne.
