In 66 he was appointed to suppress the Jewish revolt. As Vitellius occupied the throne support for Vespasian was quickly gathering. His troops defeating Vitellius set way for Vespasian was declared by the senate to be the new emperor December 21, 69. Quelling the uprisings and potential revolts he started a "theology of victory" . It legitimized the right to rule through conquest. This revolved around his victory in Judaea and was commemorated on his coins fot the next 10 years. Many bearing the image of the defeated Jews in a line know as "Judaea Capta". Also many bore the word "VIC AUG", Victory of Augustus.
