History:
Leo I the Great (in Latin Leo Magnus) was pope from 440 to 461. He is known for his intervention in the Christological controversies of the 5th century: his doctrinal position expressed in the Tome to Flavian was adopted as the orthodox doctrine at the Council of Chalcedon in 451. Faced with the disintegration of imperial power, he negotiated in 452 with Attila the retreat of the Hunnic hordes and in 455 with Genseric the survival of Rome. He is considered a saint and Doctor of the Church by the Roman Catholic Church, which celebrates him on November 10.
