Gaius Iulius Caesar Octavianus
"Nunc est bibendum! – Now is the time to drink!" With these words, Horace begins his ode celebrating Octavian’s victory over Antony and Cleopatra. Octavian's political journey began when Julius Caesar, in his will, adopted him and named him his heir. Together with Antony and Lepidus, they formed the Second Triumvirate. However, the alliance between Octavian and Antony turned into a fierce civil war, culminating in the Battle of Actium.
On the morning of September 2, 31 BCE, the armies aligned in battle formation, preparing for the greatest naval battle of antiquity. The young general took command of the right wing, assigning the left to Marcus Agrippa. The center was commanded by Arruntius. The figure of Victoria on the reverse commemorates Octavian's triumph.
