Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
"The Rain Miracle" On June 11, 173 CE, during the Marcomannic Wars (166–180 CE), the Roman army in Moravia was surrounded by the numerically superior Quadi. Cassius Dio writes that the oppressive heat and lack of water tormented the soldiers. Suddenly, dark clouds gathered, and a torrential rain fell. The soldiers hastily collected rainwater using their shields and helmets, drinking so eagerly that they momentarily forgot the advancing enemy.
Their salvation came with another miraculous event: a violent storm erupted, unleashing devastating hail upon the Quadi, while lightning struck the barbarians. The Quadi retreated. It was claimed that Marcus Aurelius brought about this event through prayers and incantations performed by an Egyptian priest accompanying him.
The miracle was commemorated on the Column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome.
