"Augustus" After defeating the supporters of Pescennius Niger and destroying Byzantium, a confrontation arose between former allies—Septimius Severus and Clodius Albinus. Severus secured the Senate’s recognition of his son Caracalla as heir to the throne and declared Clodius Albinus an "enemy of Rome."
Initially, Albinus achieved success. He proclaimed himself emperor and, with the support of loyal legions, managed to take control of most of Gaul. However, the lack of support from the Rhine legions left him at a significant disadvantage.
The armies of the two emperors clashed at the Battle of Lugdunum (modern Lyon) in 197 CE. Clodius Albinus’ forces were defeated, and he either committed suicide or was executed on the orders of Septimius Severus.
