coins ancient to romans imperial and republican maximinus thrax 235 238

Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus

"The Herdsman" Herodian writes: "After ascending to power, Maximinus enacted significant changes, ruling with extreme severity and spreading great fear. He brought with him a love of bloodshed from his homeland and was diligent in securing his rule through acts of cruelty, fearing that he might be deemed contemptible in the eyes of senators and subjects. They did not regard the high position to which fortune had elevated him but focused instead on his humble origins. It was widely said, and mocked, that before fortune raised him to the imperial throne, he had herded cattle in the Thracian mountains. Because of his towering stature and great physical strength, he was recruited as a soldier in his native land."
