coins ancient to romans imperial and republican aemilian 253

Marcus Aemilius Aemilianus

"Mars – God of War" He originated from Roman Mauretania and was a professional military officer. He held the position of governor of Upper and Lower Moesia, earning distinction for his effective defense of these provinces against Gothic invasions. In the summer of 253 CE, the troops under his command proclaimed him emperor. To legitimize his rule, the usurper marched on Rome. In August, he crossed the eastern Alps and entered Italy. Before the battle at Interamna, Trebonianus Gallus and his son were killed by their own soldiers, and Aemilian was recognized as the lawful ruler by the Senate.

His reign ended in the autumn of the same year when Valerian's forces entered northern Italy. Although Aemilian intended to oppose him militarily, he was assassinated by his own soldiers near Spoletium.
