Paper Collage on 300gsm cotton rag
framed in conservation standard chrome bespoke italian mouldings
56 x42 mm
Appeared to me the second day of my walking the Camino. The title grabbed my attention and the work spoke of the heartbreak and pain I was in from Deans passing. The loneliness and loss.
With regard to the title, I made it up, it is based on the story of Lucifer and how he was the dearest and brightest of the Angels and god cast him from the holy mountain for taking pride in his own beauty and wisdom; daring to question god's power and reject the totalitarian nature of the almighty. The collage to me feels like a diving or sinking heart, and is symbolic of the fall from grace; a fall from great love. Lucifer's heartbreak. This is not absolute by any means but speaks to the feeling around the gesture of the piece. This fall for me is not a judgement, I feel for the character of Lucifer and see glory in the rebellion, outspoken and defending his place and right to be etc especially beneath harsh righteousness.I also am very taken with the Dino de Laurentis aesthetic of sumptuous and campy 70s/80s films and it has these qualities as an influence. Now I'm not sure how all of this relates to how Andrew connected with the piece, but there is certainly a sensitivity for the beauty and tragedy in it. I'd like him to know that I stand firmly on the side of those who choose to advocate on their own behalf and not just blindly accept the status quo. Maybe this has some resonance. It's certainly a gorgeous compliment that the work is connected to such a meaningful and personal experience for Andrew. Do send him my love.It also feels like an embrace and I believe there to be a great deal of love in it!Hope this helps!Sarah
