Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus
"Tetrarchy" The reign of Domitian marks the beginning of the Late Roman Empire, known as the Dominatus. Diocletian transformed the Roman state into an absolute monarchy, establishing a despotic system of governance called the Dominatus, effectively stripping the Senate of any influence over power. The emperor was endowed with divine attributes, introducing an Eastern-style court ceremonial and the state cult of the ruler.
To improve governance, a system known as the Tetrarchy was implemented: two emperors held the title Augustus (Diocletian in the East and Maximian in the West), supported by two assistants and successors with the title Caesar (Galerius in the East and Constantius Chlorus in the West).
