Flavius Julius Constans

"The Inquisitor" Constans, who was 17 years old at the time of his father Constantine the Great’s death, inherited the central part of the Empire. Despite his youth, he managed effectively, successfully repelling barbarian attacks and earning the title Sarmaticus. After eliminating his brother Constantine II, he ruled as Imperator Caesar Flavius Julius Constans Augustus.

Constans was a devout Christian and the only son of Constantine to be baptized. He persecuted adherents of traditional Roman pagan beliefs and issued extremely harsh laws against pederasty, despite his own reputation for favoring young boys. He was known to have relations with young Germans sent to his court as hostages.

Constans was killed in a coup orchestrated by Magnentius.
