Flavius Claudius Constantinus
"The Persecutor of Christians" Constantine II was the eldest son of Constantine I and his second wife, Fausta. He was born in Arles (renamed Constantia in his honor in 328 AD, explaining the mint marks CON for Arles) and was appointed Caesar before his first birthday in 316 AD. After his father’s death, Constantine II inherited the western part of the empire. Following a dispute with his brother Constans, he invaded his territory but was ambushed and killed near Aquileia.
His coins often bear the legend "IVN," an abbreviation for junior.
In 320 AD, Licinius violated the Edict of Milan (which granted religious freedom) and began persecuting Christians in the eastern Roman Empire. He destroyed churches, imprisoned Christians, and confiscated their property.
