"Triumviri rei publicae constituendae - Triumvirs for the Restoration of the Republic" In 42 BCE, at the Battle of Philippi, the triumvirate of Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus crushed the forces of Caesar’s assassins, Brutus and Cassius, who sought to restore the Roman Republic. Later that same year, Antony summoned the Egyptian queen Cleopatra to meet him in the city of Tarsus in Cilicia to explain her refusal to assist the triumvirate in the civil war. Instead of punishing Cleopatra, Antony began an affair with her and returned with her to Egypt in 41 BCE.

In 40 BCE, a new division of the Roman world was negotiated in Italy: Antony received the eastern territories, stretching from the Adriatic Sea to the Euphrates. That same year, Antony attempted to strengthen his alliance with Octavian by marrying Octavian’s sister, Octavia.
