KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (31.5 mm, 16.50 g, 12 h). Struck circa 287/6-282 BC.
Obverse: Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon; K below.
Reverse: Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; star to outer left, cult image to inner left.
Mint: Pergamon.
Provenance: Ex E.A. Buttle Collection (May 1991), Ex Patrick Cooper Collection, Ex CNG Triton VI (January 2003).
Notes: This specimen of mine is a part of the “K” Series of Pergamon, whose namesake die master produced what is considered the finest and most accurate depictions of Alexander the Great on coinage.

The Apotheosis of Alexander
To increase his own legitimacy, Lysimachos, one of the Successors, chose to have a divinized portrait of Alexander the Great on his coinage. The deified conqueror is depicted with the horn of Ammon, the Egyptian equivalent of Zeus, as the late king believed the god was his father.
Presumably, Lysimachos was among those who accompanied Alexander during his pilgrimage to the Oracle of Ammon at Siwa, where the Macedonian King-turned-Pharaoh was confirmed to be the son of a god.
