REVERSE: SALVS PVBLI
BUST TYPE: H2 = radiate bust left in imperial matle, holding egale-tipped sceptre (scipio)
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: Γ/-//-
WEIGHT 3.80g / AXIS: 12h / WIDTH: 21mm
RIC: 571 VAR. (MINTMARK IN LEFT FIELD UNLISTED)
COLLECTION NO. 678
Note: Rare and desirable consular obverse legend (CONS III) in combination with a rare spelling variant of reverse legend SALVS PVBLI (instead of SALVS PVBLIC as usual) in combination with a rare issue with officina mark in field and no XXI reform mark.
This coin is part of the scarce and sought-after first phase of Ticinum’s 6th emission (according to Pink’s emission classification) with greek numerals of officinae not accompanied by the XXI monetary reform mark. In the much more common and abundant second phase of 6th emission the greek numerals were followed by the XXI mark in the exergue.
Only the 5th example of this type known!
Beautiful example with much original silvering remaining.
The last auction listing of this exact variant was Paul Francis Jacquier auction 45 lot 1448 (ex Philippe Gysen collection) with hammer price of 400 EUR + buyer's premium:
