Septimius Severus. AR denarius, Emesa mint, struck 194 CE; 17mm, 3.09g, 7h. cf. BMCRE p. 96 ∬, cf. RIC 409A (Lawrence), cf. RSC 327d. Obv: IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG II CO; head laureate r. Rx: MIN–E–R – VICT; Minerva seated l. on shield, holding Victory and spear. Very rare; unlisted and possibly the 2nd known with this combination of obv. and rev. legends. VF.
This obv. legend variant with II CO seems to be known from a single die; this collector has located only 6 other coins that have been struck from it. The present coin has been identified as the 7th coin, 4th rev. type, and 5th rev. die.
