Comment:
Associated with Liquid Blacking Manufactory. Issued tokens. He did not employ Charles Dickens (q.v.) as a child that was a James Warren who was not connected to this business. Trade card (Heal,15.17) in the form of a comic poem titled 'The Irish Cobbler' in Heal Collection. The last lines of the poem are: "Pat tried to smoke, but could not find a light; Then seiz'd a Boot, reflecting Warren's Black, Which lit his pipe (as Pat said) 'in a crack'." The poem is followed by: "This Easy Shining and Brilliant Blacking, Prepared by Robert Warren..." Heal,15.18 advertises on recto "Robert Warren, The Original Proprietor of the Japan Liquid Blacking...", and on verso "Warren's Blacking Warehouse. Robert Warren. 30 Strand." Trade card in Banks Collection (Banks,15.10) is identical to the verso of Heal,15.18.
