Q. Servilius Caepio Brutus

Rome, 54 BC

Avers: Head of Libertas, behind LIBERTAS

Revers: Consul between Lictores to left, lead by an Accensus. BRVTVS in exergue

Sear 397, Crawford 433/1, Albert 1361

The moneyer is the later Cesar murderer Brutus, who was of strict republican sentiments. Shown are his legendary ancestor L.Iunius Brutus (consul from 509 BC), who is said to have expelled Tarquinius Superbus, the last king of Rome, and to have been the first consul of the young republic. The reason for this coinage were probably rumors that arose in Rome in the year 54 according to which Pompeius was striving for the sole rule.
