In Chinese mythological history, few have been fortunate enough to see a phoenix, yet those who have seen, have been blessed with good fortune. This crimson-feathered bird possibly has its origins in the writings of historian Herodotus, who claims to have spotted one in Egypt over 2000 years ago. Since then, the bird has become a significant mythic creature in both Western and Eastern cultures.

The phoenix has been present in the myths of China for centuries and remains a popular and even sacred part of the culture to this day. Statues of the phoenix are common in public as well as in homes for those who practice the art of feng shui. The Phoenix, known as Fenghuang in China, is believed to be a purely positive creature, a benevolent bird whose appearance brings prosperity and fortune.
On the obverse field of 2022 1 oz Silver Chinese Myths and Legends Phoenix Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait was completed by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark in 2015 and has since been used on many coins throughout the Commonwealth. Her Majesty is depicted here in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem sitting atop her head. Inscriptions on the rim read Elizabeth II, Australia, 1 oz .9999 Ag, 2022, 1 Dollar.
The reverse of 2022 Australian Silver Chinese Myths and Legends Phoenix Coins features a phoenix flying through the air. This beautiful design by Lucas Bowers gives you a great look at this mythical bird, which includes the head of a pheasant, the wings of a swallow, the body of a mandarin duck, the tail of a peacock, and the beak of a parrot.
