HISTORY
This unofficial commemorative medal was awarded to the members of the Petrograd Soviet on the occasion of the third anniversary of the October Revolution. According to some catalogues, a total of 3000 silver and 300 bronze medals were struck at the Petrograd Mint. The design came from the artist and professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Petersburg Anton Vasyutinsky, who was also responsible for many designs of coins and medals (e.g. the medal 300 years of the Romanov dynasty).
There are many myths surrounding this medal that are discussed among collectors. It is said that these medals were presented by the German communist Clara Zetkin to the workers, soldiers and peasants (silver) and organizers (bronze) of the Petrograd Soviet on a bow made of red ribbon. The assertion of the historical name "medal for the storming of the Winter Palace" (because many members of the Soviet are said to have been involved in it) cannot be supported by sources either.
In view of the small number of these medals, it seems strange that they can be found quite often in internet forums. There are countless forgeries, good and bad, so that one is inclined to regard the medal itself as a fantasy object - but there is an early evidence of the existence of these medals: Roman Shein the curator of the former Vladimir Lenin Museum shows one them in a historical film (0:46) as part of a display collection students in 1960. The expertise of this phalerist should be a strong indication of the real existence of this object. There is also an offical catalogue of table medals from USSR state museums that shows this medal in bigger size without an ear.
