As the world’s largest seated Buddha carved in stone, the imposing Leshan Giant Buddha statue is selected as the focal point of the 4th coin in the World Buddha Heritage series. This magnificent religious relic featured on the obverse of the coin is an important artefact that has withstood the test of time. It is chosen for both its religious significance on Buddhism in China as well as man’s ingenuity at a time when tools were limited.
Located where the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers converge, the image of the Buddha carving on a cliff face was a project pioneered by a monk named Hai Tong in 713 AD. He believed that the presence of a Buddha would help improve the situation of bad weather and raging waters that was plaguing the lives of the villagers.
Apparently, this project which lasted 90 years resulted in a tremendous amount of material from the cliff face being deposited in the rivers below. This led to gentler currents and safer waters for passing ships. Besides its religious and historical significance, the Leshan Giant Buddha is also celebrated as an architectural marvel. Towering at a height of 71 metres, each foot is large enough to accommodate 100 standing people and the shoulders are as broad as a basketball court. 1,021 intricate buns form the Buddha’s coiled hair. Cleverly hidden gutters and grooves found throughout the statue drain rainwater, reducing erosion and preserving its façade.
Buddha’s exceptional aura which manifests as an emanating glow, is skillfully depicted on the coin. When the coin catches light, dazzling rays appear to radiate from the Buddha, bringing great blessings.
As a complement to this strong and sacred icon of Buddhism, the Khorlo (Dharma Wheel) is featured on the reverse of the coin. Rendered in full colour on the silver coin, the Khorlo symbolises Buddha’s teachings and the turning of the wheel is an allegory of spiritual change brought about by Buddha’s teachings. The eight spokes of the wheel represent the Noble Eightfold Path which is a code of conduct following Buddha’s teachings to a life free from suffering and leading to enlightenment.
The rich historical, cultural and religious significance encapsulated in this coin makes it a valuable addition to any collection.
