Lucius Septimius Severus Pertinax
"Parthicus Maximus!" Immediately after assuming power, Septimius Severus faced the rising strength of the Parthians. He left Rome and traveled east by sea. During the war (197–199), the Parthian capital of Ctesiphon fell into Roman hands, and the northern part of Mesopotamia was annexed to the empire.
Herodian writes: "Advancing slowly, they reached Ctesiphon, where the 'Great King' Artabanus resided. The Romans attacked the unprepared barbarians, slaughtering all who stood in their way, looting the cities, and taking all the women and children into captivity. In this way, Severus gained the glory of victory over the Parthians more through the fortune of fate than by deliberate planning."
Septimius Severus adopted the title "Parthicus Maximus", the greatest of Parthian conquerors.
