coins ancient to romans imperial and republican marius 269

Marcus Aurelius Marius

"Empire in Cologne" A Roman usurper in the western part of the empire in 269 CE, Marius hailed from the lower social classes and was reportedly a craftsman by trade (a blacksmith). He later likely served in the military, although his exact role is unknown.

After the suppression of Laelianus' revolt in early 269 CE, Marius initiated another rebellion in Mogontiacum against the authority of Victorinus, the successor of Postumus. According to the Historia Augusta, his reign lasted only 2–3 days. However, the substantial number of coins bearing his name suggests a reign of several months instead.

At the mint in Cologne (Colonia Agrippinensis), he issued low-value coins in his name. Marius was ultimately murdered by his own officers, possibly with a sword of his own making.
