Marcus Aurelius Probus

"Adventus Augusti – The Emperor's Return" Around 280 CE, Emperor Probus is said to have transformed the arena of the Circus Maximus into a forest, releasing hundreds, if not thousands, of animals such as ibexes, sheep, ostriches, and others. Once the improvised forest was filled with herbivores, the public was allowed onto the arena to begin hunting. The gracious emperor permitted every Roman to keep their trophy and take it home.

Interestingly, the following day, Probus had to stage another spectacle, releasing nearly 400 lions and 300 bears into the arena to satisfy the crowd, which, despite the previous entertainment, still craved excitement. This denarius commemorates the joyous return of Emperor Probus to Rome.
