KINGS OF MACEDON
"The Impaired King" Philip III Arrhidaeus – King of Macedonia and nominal ruler of Egypt. He was the illegitimate son of Philip II of Macedon and Philinna, and the half-brother of Alexander III the Great. Appointed king after Alexander’s death, he was mentally impaired, and the governance of the kingdom was carried out in his name by Perdiccas, Antipater, and other Diadochi.
After Antipater’s death in 319 BCE, the kingdom descended into fierce power struggles, with Arrhidaeus serving as a tool of legitimacy. He was passed between the control of Polyperchon, his wife Eurydice, Cassander, and Olympias, Alexander’s mother. Olympias reportedly imprisoned Arrhidaeus in a cramped cell and ordered a group of Thracian mercenaries to kill him. Later, his body was buried with honors on Cassander’s orders.
