Sabina, the wife of Roman Emperor Hadrian, was a woman of noble lineage and strong influence. Born around 83 AD, she was the daughter of Emperor Trajan’s niece Matidia and married Hadrian in 100 AD. Though their marriage was largely political, Sabina held the prestigious title of Augusta, a title that granted her significant respect and authority. Despite a reportedly strained relationship with Hadrian (hmmm wonder why ;-)), she accompanied him on his many travels across the empire. Sabina’s image was widely commemorated in statues and coins, symbolizing her lasting legacy as one of the most prominent women of her time.
Purchasing a decent example of Hadrian’s medium bronze coin with her image is not an easy challenge. Here we are dealing with a coin with not very photographic surface, but with good detail and interesting provenance (purchased at the Numismata fair in 1996, and sold years later by Numisfitz). Additionally, the bust of Sabina is beautiful and interesting here. Firstly because of her braid and secondly because of the variant with Empress wearing grain-ear wreath.
