Legend after Titus Livius: The daughter of the roman commander Spurius Tarpeius the vestal Tarpeia, betrayed (out of love to the sabin Titus Tatius) the capitol. She led the sabine enemies in the capitol and should get "what they wear at their left arms" Tarpeia thought about golden arm rings. Wrong thought. After the betrayal she get slayed/buuried with the shields which also carried with the left arm og the sabins. In memory of their betrayal the rock of the Capitol, over which later traitors thrown to their death, called "Tarpeian rock".
