Septimius Severus. AR denarius, Emesa, 195 CE; 18mm, 2.98g. BMCRE W406–7, RIC 433 note, RSC 659. Obv: IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II; head laureate right. Rx: • T • R P III • IMP • V COS • ΓI; captive seated r., head bowed forward, hands tied behind back; in front, bow, quiver, and two oval shields. The image of a captive refers to Severus’s victory against the Parthians. Rare; 2 in Reka Devnia, although the Kelly Collection included three different examples of the type. Toned; good VF.
According to RSC, “On this and some of the following the last II are from fractured punches and look like ΓI [as the present example], IΓ, ΓΓ, and FI.”
