Marc Antony and Octavian, as Triumvirs - AR denarius, struck 41 BC, military mint in Syria, M ANTON IMP III VIR R P C AVG, bare head of Marc Antony r., rev. CAESAR IMP PONT III VIR R P C, bare head of Octavian r., wt. 3.85gms. (Crawford 528/2b; Sydenham 1193a) RSC 2 var (without slight beard for Octavian). Some light wear to hair of Octavian, otherwise nearly Extremely Fine. Very well struck on a rather compact flan. Two excellent portraits on lustrous, very attractive in hand.
This example is lustrous with great tones and details. Extremely rare in this condition. When I purchased it was it wrongly classified as a 528/3.
Provenance from the collection of a British author and collector, Mr. TR Hardaker.
just a hand full of other examples in sales archives, due to wrong categorizing, the most recent extremely fine one: Numismatica Ars Classica, Auction 73 (18 November 2013), lot 262 (realized 20,000 CHF) and Heritage auctions is having one coming!
