Obv.: IOIIIIIHORIYS....ITIIOIIIAI
Rev.: VTAH ICIIOAISTOTISIIO
Weight: 1.37g
Diameter: 16mm
Mint: Unknown mint. According to Grierson tremisses with a Victoria with dotted wings may have been produced in the Alamannia. An attribution to the eastern parts of the Merovingian realm (Austrasia) seems in any case likely, given the very blundered legends.
Date: possibly early 7th century
The coin was found in England at the so called 'South Lincolnshire productive site', which is in the parish of Heckington, in North Kesteven. The site is exceptional for the quantity of continental coins of the 7th and 8th centuries, implying it had a significant role in North Sea trade. It may have suffered a real decline or been abandoned by the 9th century.
