In 1893, the Colombian Exposition was held in Chicago, Illinois, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas (he initially landed in what is today the Bahamas, and he thought he was in Japan). Soley produced this medal to celebrate the occasion. (Eglit 142)
