Centaur
Collector and expert for roman coinage

This variety is not pictured in the Crawford Plates. It is distinctly different than any of the other 53/2 varieties. The variety was discovered by Pierluigi Debernardi and is very scarce.
This series is identified as 53A because it is different in so many ways from the other 53/2 varieties. The short flagged cape is unlike any of the other varieties, the four locks of hair, the visible hair cord and the remarkable workmanship on some of the examples draws this apart. The trapezoidal frame suggests an early style.
Obverse: Head of Roma with four locks of hair at the back of the neck. The hair binding is clearly visible above the four locks of hair, and this is unique in the 53/2 series. Small griffon tufts at the back of the helmet, and detailed 3-dimensional rendering of the griffon tufts.
Reverse: Horse's hind legs are bent at the hock, so that the hind hooves are ahead of the hock.
