coins ancient to romans imperial and republican trajan decius 249 251

Gaius Messius Quintus Traianus Decius

"Adventus Augusti – The Arrival of the Emperor" Trajan Decius was born in the village of Budalia near Sirmium in Pannonia. He served as the governor of Lower Moesia and Tarraconensis in Spain, and he was also a member of the Senate. In 248 CE, he was sent by Emperor Philip the Arab to the Danube, where he was tasked with stabilizing the situation after the rebellion of the Pacatian and liberating the provinces from the Carpi and Goths.

His successes in fighting against the barbarians led the soldiers to proclaim him emperor (reportedly against his will) in June 249 CE. Decius marched into Italy and defeated Philip’s army in the Battle of Verona in September 249 CE. Philip was killed, and his son and co-emperor, Philip II, was murdered in Rome. The reverse of the coin "Adventus Augustus" commemorates Decius's return to Rome.
