Lucius Domitius Aurelianus
"Aurelian Wall" The Aurelian Wall refers to the fortifications surrounding Rome, constructed between 271 and 275 CE. Emperor Aurelian ordered the wall's construction in response to the Alans' invasion of Italy in 268 CE, and it was completed by Emperor Probus. The walls enclosed all seven hills of Rome, the Campus Martius, and Trastevere on the western bank, one of the city's most important districts.
Despite repelling the barbarian invasion, Romans continued to feel vulnerable, fearing that the old defenses might not withstand another attack. In response, the emperor decided to build a new, much stronger line of fortifications around the city. The construction took only a few years, as many existing structures, such as the Praetorian Guard barracks, were incorporated into the design, saving both time and resources.
