Marcus Flavius Valerius Constantius
"The Father of Constantine" Constantius I was born into a poor family in Illyria, he rose through the ranks by serving in the military. On March 1, 293 CE, he was adopted by the Western Emperor Maximianus and granted the title of Caesar. Shortly thereafter, he fought against the self-proclaimed emperor Carausius, who controlled Britain and the coasts of Gaul. In 296 CE, he defeated Carausius’s successor, Allectus, and brought Britain under Roman control.
It is believed that he was a follower of the god Sol Invictus (Latin for "Unconquered Sun"). On May 1, 305 CE, following the abdication of Diocletian and Maximianus, he assumed the title of Augustus. He died after a campaign against the Picts in Eboracum (modern-day York) on July 25, 306 CE. He was the father of Constantine the Great.
