The Man Who Became a God

To increase his own legitimacy, Lysimachos chose to have the portrait of Alexander the Great on his coinage. The deified Alexander is depicted with the horn of Ammon, the Egyptian equivalent of Zeus, as the late king believed the god was his father. It is plausible that Lysimachos, as one of Alexander's bodyguards, would have accompanied the conqueror to the Siwa Oasis in Egypt, where the Oracle of Ammon confirmed Alexander's divine parentage.
