In 1875, George Bache Soley purchased the U.S. Mint's First Steam Press as scrap. He also obtained collars and blanking dies used for the production of Type I gold dollars. He restored the press and converted it to run mechanically. Along with William Barber, they set up a business at 1205 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they produced medals.
