James Duncan, a hardware merchant in Charlottetown issued the first Canadian decimal piece, the "cent" (100 to the Spanish dollar) of 1855. Competing with other halfpenny tokens (150 to the Spanish dollar), it is doubtful whether they were readily accepted.
