ALFOLDI 009 / - (UNLISTED!)
COLLECTION NO. 767
NOTE: PEGASUS ON SHIELD

Note: Spectacular military bust of the finest style with a Pegasus on the shield in combination with a very rare (at Siscia mint) greek KA reform mark and no officina marks (Siscia used the latin XXI reform mark, not greek KA mark, as a rule).

Probus antoninianii with no mintmarks or no officina marks, including this example with only the KA reform mark, were donativa coins distributed by the emperor himself during various festive occasions, especially during the emperor's Adventvs, i.e. official visit to a given city.  Regular Adventvs issues coins with mintmarks in exergue were usually struck long after Probus had left the city.

Unlisted by Alfoldi; only the 3rd known specimen in the world; all from the same pair of dies!

Same obverse die as my coin no. 817 (with gamma//XXI in exergue) and coin no. 1318 with Soli Invicto reverse and -/gamma//XXI mark)

A coin of the highest numismatic interest!

Provenance: Solidus Numismatik auction 9 lot 513 (October 2016)
